I'm finally firing up my blog with a first post of a series of illustrations for a family friend who commissioned these images to tell the story of his grandfather through a few milestone moments. The story takes place in what is today Polish territory, but was Russia at the time.
We start at the very beginning with bris (circumcision)
Bar Mitzvah
Boy entrepreneur in the family shop
Young man joins the czar's army to fight Japan, circa 1904
Brave soldier saves the flag
Honored by the czar with permission to move to St. Petersburg
But first he must marry the girl of his dreams
All immigrate to America and only the newly weds choose to go St. Petersburg. They must be crazy.
Czarina hosts a ball and presents gifts to the wives of war heroes
Some years later, a happy family
